Introduction

The books on this list will give you the opportunity to see yourself and the world in a new way; to reconnect with memories; and open doors to discovery, knowledge, adventure, and enchantment. They will inspire you to think about life, universal truths, and the human experience. This list is intended as a tool for a variety of audiences -- college bound students, educators, librarians, and parents. It can help prepare you for college, and:

  • Provide hours of rewarding, pleasurable reading
  • Offer opportunities for independent and lifelong learning
  • Enhance appreciation of different cultures and times
The list is divided into five sections: fiction, biography, nonfiction, drama, and poetry.

In selecting these works for the list, the committee used a variety of criteria: readability, cultural and ethnic diversity, balance of points of view, contemporary and classical works, different genres, and availability.

The list is revised every five (5) years by a committee of the Young Adult Library Services Association of the American Library Association.

This site is intended to complement the printed list. It includes the full contents of the printed list, and also provides links to Web sites that supply more information about particular authors and/or titles. If you know of a site not linked here that provides substantial information about a book or author on this list, please notify the site creator.
